SOCIOLOGY @ HAYES

Crowd of People

OUR CURRICULUM PURPOSE

Sociology explores the structure and functioning of societies, the nature of social interaction, the relationship between the individual and society and the nature of change in human societies.

Students will study the nature of sociological evidence and the methods used by sociologists to understand and explain society and make conclusions on the impact of class, gender, age and ethnicity on individuals and society.

Through creative teaching in a positive atmosphere, the Sociology department provides students with an increased understanding of their place in the world and a heightened curiosity about why individuals, groups, communities and whole societies work the way they do.

KEY FEATURES OF LEARNING

Students complete a linear course at both KS4 and KS5.  Whilst the courses retain some similarities, there is a bridging unit between the two.  Each course is comprised of a number of different sections of learning. The main topics at GCSE are Research Methods, Families and Households, Education, Crime and Deviance and Social Stratification. At A-Level, we study Research Methods, Theory, Families and Households, Education, Crime and Deviance and Beliefs in Society.

Sociology allows students to develop a wide range of values central to that of the Hayes Learner.  For example, students will learn respect for each other and the ability to develop opinions and form views on big concepts that impact people in everyday life, such as families, education, crime, beliefs and poverty.

DEVELOPING LEARNERS

We want students to critically understand the society that we live in.  Students leave us as articulate citizens, who are engaged with and able to form opinions on critical perspectives and the complex workings of our society.
